Coupland Dancehall

Coupland, TX

Coupland is a town of 317 people with a pretty interesting history. In 1883, landowner Morgan C. Hamilton died and willed the land to nephew, Civil War Major, and former Travis County sheriff, Theodore Van Buren Coupland—who then founded Coupland on the inherited land. The town remained unincorporated until 2012, 125 years later. Recently, the town residents voted overwhelmingly to incorporate the city and its first mayor was elected in 2013. And people say things don't change in Texas!

The highlight of the town is the historic Old Coupland Inn & Dancehall. The building was built in 1904 and served as several different businesses, including a pharmacy, hardware store, newspaper, and tavern. The current owners bought it in 1992 and today it's a dance hall, inn, and restaurant. Several movies have been filmed on location, including 'Lonesome Dove' and 'A Perfect World' with Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner. Music videos have also been filmed here, including Stevie Ray Vaughn's “Times Change” and George Strait’s “Every Little Honky Tonk Bar”.

Very cool old Texas vibes inside with a lot of neon signs—don't see too many of those anymore. There are a couple of pool tables for cowpokes to shoot some stick and a good-sized dance floor for two-stepping. Tons of autographed headshots on the walls in the back so it looks like it's a well-traveled spot for touring musicians. Also enjoyed the swinging saloon doors in the men's bathroom. (Did not check the women's bathroom on account of not wanting to get shot 😂.) Am definitely planning on coming back for a ribeye dinner and a night of boot scootin'.

As a bonus, the last pic is of a building located around the corner. I'm not sure what it is, but it looks related to the Coupland Inn and quite old as well.
