White Horse Tavern

Burton, TX

Find your way to the Texas Cotton Gin Museum in Burton, TX and you can mosey on over across the street to White Horse Tavern, a classic Texas saloon that's been kept in great shape over the years. Burton is a town of 300 residents and its claim to fame is the Burton Farmers Gin, which was built in 1914 and is the oldest working cotton gin in the country. It also has a damn fine bar.

Round Top, just SW of Burton, is a gold mine for antique hunters (more on that in an upcoming post). That's why it's no surprise White Horse has a bunch of collectible signs and knickknacks all over the walls. You can even see the original liquor license paperwork if you're some weirdo lawyer who pores over legal documents while getting plastered at the bar. Just kidding, I’m not judging. They’re pretty cool. (By the way, the license was issued on March 3, 1963.)

There's also a nice porch and a big white horse outside, so you know this place is straight-shootin'. I also always appreciate a good neon sign, and this place has several. It's a classic spot where you can knock back a couple Lone Stars after a long day of antique hunting in the area. Giddy up.
